IN THE DARK AGES, there was the dog house. A lap board and composite shingle affair, in which Fido would pine for the return of his masters, hour after eye-drooping hour. It wasn't cruel, but it wasn't enlightening. No exercise, no socializing, no treats from a kind hand. Yes, there was the occasional finch on the roof, but overall the dog house was a cerebral black hole, worlds away from the master's tantalizing cache of cashmere scarves, Kilim rugs and cap-toe oxfords.

Then came THE DOG PARK, a canine renaissance that lifted Fido from his dog house stupor into a new era of physical and mental fitness. He made friends, sparred with the Jolly Ball and ran himself into a blissful, post-marathon coma. At home, neighbors remarked how well-behaved he was, how lean he looked and how accepting he was of other dogs. Fido just smiled and dreamed of beef jerky.
